Margaret Thatcher luv her or hate her

Was the last premier we had who actually tried to govern the country
& who loved our country - unlike all who came after they all dithered/
talked/made terrible decisions & to a large degree they certainly didnt
serve like her - they just tried to fill their own pockets.

Cameron hasn't a clue neither but then he took over a broken Britain.

Maggie was an honest polician ... which seems to be becoming a rare commodity these days

She put her country first her party second and herself third

She turned the tide by governing the country herself and not letting the unions do it

She brought in 'right to buy' which meant that many could buy the council houses they lived in

She did make some mistakes ... but all in all she was good for Great Britain

It would be impossible for any Prime Minister holding office for 13 years to get every decision right, but it is undeniable that at all times she had the well being of the country as a whole as her driving force despite whether it made her popular or not.. She makes all subsequent Prime Ministers look like minnows, and as teepee says at least she was honest unlike a latter long serving money grabber.

Don't forget charisma
... that as the first female PM in the UK she showed that women from humble beginnings can achieve a lot
Introduced right to buy which has decimated social housing stock
... that was a positive achievement charisma
... the failure of New Labour's Blair & Brown to encourage the build of more social housing is what let down those in need

Her big mistake was the Poll Tax ... which was never going to work

Thank God (and I'm not even religious) that we don't have the likes of charisma in power.

I could go to task with most of the examples but the one I like best is her being blamed for the banking crisis. Now lets see how long was Tony Liar in office, 11 years and Gordon Brown 3 years, and of course Brown was our Chancellor of the Exchequer during the Blair years. So they only had 14 years to spot the "mistakes" Margaret Thatcher made when liberalising the banking sector and to put safeguards in place before the financial crisis happened on their watch. Obviously her fault then, not.

Marmite springs to mind.. for me she never considered collateral damage in almost all of her decisions.

if all decisions didnt have consequecies, then it would hardly be politics...
I'm fully aware of that :) my comment was about her lack of consideration for them not that they didn't exist.

Margaret Thatcher was a divisive woman and did a lot of good for this country and a lot of bad. Had she not been in power in 1982 then the alternative would have been Michael Foot's extreme left pro CND Labour Party at the time and the Falklands would have been evacuated and would have been surrendered to Argentina. Also remember that Thatcher fought the EU and a super state and future monetary union-the Euro-at every turn. Immigration under Thatcher was small and at least manageable and Islam was barely an issue. Britain would be a worse place now had Labour gained power in the 80s and the Marxists of Derek Hatton and Arthur Scargill been allowed to run riot. Thatcher also presided over the original " Dragons Den" as her government invested in small business start ups and gave people an opportunity to work for themselves as well as buy their own council homes. On the downside she let our mining industry disappear which should never have happened although Scargill was equally to blame for not holding a strike ballot. Those pits were making a loss but even so should have been given more time to become profitable. Unemployment was very high too under Thatcher and that cannot be ignored. As a leader however she was respected around the world and her enemies were our enemies namely socialism, the EU and Islam and leaders since such as Blair and Cameron were not fit the lace the Iron Lady's boots. She was both brilliant and terrible as a leader but as humans nobody is perfect. May she rest in peace.

I agree with a lot of what you say Crann ... unfortunately for the miners they had a dud leader in King Arthur
... what the government should have done was put £millions into research to develop clean burn for coal
... our country sits on a thousand years of coal energy ... we need to work out how to convert that to clean power ... and export that technology to the rest of the world
